June Plant Highlight ~

June is here. We’re proud to highlight an outdoor plant that is beautiful and hardy. The Clematis, Or better known as “Leather Flower” are trailing vine plants perfect to decorate a trellis or arch with. Purple Red, Blue, Fushia and pops of white bring an interesting dance of color to your outdoor space!

The Clematis plant is one peculiar plant! With THREE different blooming period groups! Along with when blooming occurs, the group type also entail different sizes and shapes of blooms and when and how to care for the plant. HOW COOL!? The three types are:

Group 1: Spring Bloomers

A medium Saucer shaped flower often with multiple blooms and require no pruning for upkeep. The blooms will come from older parts of the plants and does not require the level of pruning group 2-3 do.

Group 2: Repeat Bloomers

Flowering early to middle of the Summer. Similar to the Group 1 but the flowers bloom first from older vine/wood. Than once more mature will begin to bloom flowers from the newer growth. Prune when necessary for upkeep and to promote new blooms.

Group 3: Summer of Fall Bloomers

Blooming later than the other two groups this group has larger saucer star shaped blooms. In late winter to early spring its important to prune the vines back to promote growth and new blooms

Water Needs: Clematis have relatively larger/deeper roots than other outdoor plants! You want to water slowly and thoroughly to ensure the plant is hydrated correctly. Year 1, water weekly to build a strong root system. 1-2 Years after planting, The Clematis will reward your hard work by being hardy and healthy. Eventually not needing as much water!

Lighting Needs: A well known saying for this plant is “Head in the Sun, Feet in the shade”. This plant LOVES sunlight but the roots prefer a cooler, shady space. So finding a happy medium is a must! 6 Hours of sunlight will help this plant ten fold.

Media / Fertilizing Needs: Clematis need a large space to spread its vines. Spots that Clematis thrive like on trellis, walls or poles will encourage more growth! Clematis need a level of air quality and air flow to prevent mildew and rot.

Pests / Disease Needs: Fungal stem rot is common killer for the Clematis. Turning the roots, stems and subsequently blooms mushy and black. Pests such as Thrips, Mealy Bugs and Dust Mites are going to be common but simple upkeep can assist with pest control.
